Deep dive into prevention ethics: Non-discrimination and the SPF (series)

Deep dive into prevention ethics: Non-discrimination and the SPF (series)

This series will address the need for ongoing prevention ethics training. In six interactive virtual sessions, participants will focus on taking a deep dive into the principles of the Code of Ethics for Prevention Specialists with special focus on how these principles apply when implementing the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). Each session will focus on a different principle. After a short presentation, participants will work together in small groups to look at how that principle can be applied by our prevention workforce while implementing the SPF.

This prevention ethics series is for substance misuse prevention practitioners that have already completed a Foundations in Prevention Ethics training. If you would like to attend this series but have not yet completed the prevention ethics foundation course, complete the free, self-paced, online prevention ethics course on HealtheKnowledge before attending this ethics series.

In order to receive a certificate of attendance for this training, participants are required to actively participate and be on camera. Participants will be allowed into trainings up to 10 minutes after the start of the session. After that time, no new attendees will be accepted into the session because the group will have moved into breakout rooms.

Rural Responses to Opioid Use from a Nonprofit Perspective

Rural Responses to Opioid Use from a Nonprofit Perspective

The NW Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Collaborative presents our monthly webinar series.

Description: Mainstream media portrayals of rural America tend to focus on themes of political conservatism, lack of resources, and exodus of younger adults. But these stereotypes miss innovative work happening in rural areas, and a long-standing capacity among community building and collaboration around important issues like public health. This presentation will provide examples of rural-based care and responses to the opioid crisis in Southeast Washington, from staff of an independent nonprofit. Public-private partnerships, state and federal grant funding, volunteerism, and mobile-based services will be examined for their utility across a few different models of care.

Objectives: by the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

Identify service strategies available to rural health care providers, enumerate benefits of a harm reduction approach in rural areas, articulate funding structures and opportunities to diversify funding support of rural-prioritized health care services

Speaker: Everett Maroon, MPH, is Executive Director of Blue Mountain Heart to Heart (BMHTH), a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Walla Walla, Washington, focusing on HIV care and prevention, and care and recovery for people with substance use disorder. He is engaged in regional and statewide efforts to increase pathways for recovery in rural areas and for stigmatized patient populations. Everett co-authored the Greater Columbia Accountable Community of Health's opioid demonstration project, called the Opioid Resource Network, and continues to be engaged in Medicaid transformation efforts in his region.

Prevention in pictures: Using prevention graphic novels to facilitate conversations with youth

Prevention in pictures: Using prevention graphic novels to facilitate conversations with youth

Join New England PTTC to learn about a unique prevention tool: Graphic Medicine. Graphic Medicine are evidence-based ways of accessibly communicating health information. In the Air is a graphic medicine built to foster conversations with and among young people around vaping, choices about substance use, and social factors. This graphic novel-styled story of five teens going through high school incorporates the behavioral science of substance misuse prevention with the stories, interests, and ideas of members of the Tobacco Free Rhode Island Youth Ambassadors. The novel has questions to help guide the discussion, a strong research base, and roots in risk and protective factors. During this session, participants will become familiar with the resource, how to use it to facilitate conversations with young people, and how to use the accompanying facilitator guide. Participants will learn how to request copies and learn about an upcoming resource in the same style that addresses youth problem gambling. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and explore how this and future products can work to support their prevention work.

Changing patterns of alcohol use by girls and young adult women

Changing patterns of alcohol use by girls and young adult women

Alcohol use among young people, including adolescents and, to a lesser extent, young adults, has been declining over the past 20 years. This is great news, given evidence that alcohol can alter the developing brain and contribute to a wide range of harms, including accidents, overdoses, and sexual assaults.

While the declines in drinking are good news, a closer look at the data shows that the declines have been much larger for males than females. As a result, for some age ranges, girls and young adult women are now more likely to drink and binge drink than males for the first time since data collection began more than a century ago. And while alcohol use is declining for adolescents and young adults in their 20s, it is increasing for adults over the age of 30, particularly for women. For every age group, differences in alcohol consumption between males and females continue to narrow.

Important questions include why the gaps have narrowed between males and females, why alcohol use is increasing among young adult women in their 30s, and what it all means. Several contributing factors have been hypothesized, including increases in stress that disproportionately affect females, narrowing income gaps with young adult women now out-earning males in several metropolitan areas throughout the country, and cultural shifts leading women to delay or skip marriage and childbirth.

As patterns of drinking have changed for girls and women, so has our understanding of the health effects of alcohol for females. Alcohol impacts health more severely in a variety of ways for females and males. Narrowing gaps in alcohol use have contributed to narrowing gaps in alcohol-related harms (e.g., deaths, liver disease, injuries), which makes the increases in alcohol use for women in their 30s more concerning.

Resolving the fidelity-adaptation dilemma and implementation strategies

Resolving the fidelity-adaptation dilemma and implementation strategies

Join the PTTC Implementation Science Working Group for a webinar that addresses a common overarching question in prevention: "how can an evidence-based intervention  (EBI) be delivered with fidelity to its scientific components, while also responding effectively to changing real-word conditions?” Mindful of the public health adage, “one size doesn’t fit all,” how can intervention delivery staff respond effectively to these conflicting demands? This session will summarize major challenges and their resolution as illustrated by the “Fidelity-Adaptation Dilemma.” A general prevention science goal is to effectively disseminate, adopt, implement, improve, and sustain relevant EBIs to benefit residents from a local community. Strategies for addressing this dilemma across diverse real-world settings will be discussed.

This webinar is designed to compliment the Implementation Science Work Group's four-module course on selecting evidence-based programs and interventions, available on HealthEKnowledge.  It is recommended that participants are familiar with the contents of that course prior to attending this webinar, but not required.

Promoting prevention by understanding the who, what, and why of psychostimulant use

Promoting prevention by understanding the who, what, and why of psychostimulant use

The rise of psychostimulant use over the past several years has contributed to significant negative consequences in mental health, medical, and social outcomes among communities. These outcomes are further exacerbated by the structural and systemic drivers of social determinants of health. Addressing stimulant use disorder must take into consideration the interaction of these factors in a comprehensive, public health approach to treatment. Ultimately, prevention efforts may be enhanced through understanding of the specific nuances of stimulant users and their particular vulnerabilities.

Exploring the Frontier: Virtual Reality as a Tool in Treating Substance Use Disorders

Exploring the Frontier: Virtual Reality as a Tool in Treating Substance Use Disorders

Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive technology that creates a simulated experience. Unlike traditional media, such as television or computer screens, VR offers a three-dimensional (3D) experience. One of the remarkable aspects of VR is Social VR, which allows individuals to interact with each other in 3D virtual spaces in real-time. This interaction is facilitated through the use of 360-degree immersive content and head-mounted displays, providing a sense of presence and realism in virtual interactions.

In this Northwest ATTC webinar, Dr. Sarah Clingan, an Associate Project Scientist at UCLA, will delve into the current state of VR technology, particularly focusing on its application in treating substance use disorders. The presentation will explore how VR can be utilized in therapeutic settings, offering insights into both the proven benefits and potential applications of VR that have yet to be fully explored or tested. This exploration will include examining how VR can simulate various environments and scenarios, which could be instrumental in developing new treatment strategies for substance use disorders.

The Fundamentals of Understanding and Using Data in Prevention Part 2: Collecting, Prioritizing, and Managing Your Data

The Fundamentals of Understanding and Using Data in Prevention Part 2: Collecting, Prioritizing, and Managing Your Data

Decades of research underscores the importance of strategically using data to guide substance use prevention efforts. Data is used in many ways, such as identifying risk and protective factors and current substance use trends, understanding the personal and societal consequences of use, assessing the impact of policy decisions on use, and informing prevention professionals about evidence-based practices. Accurate, comprehensive data allows us to understand the substance use landscape, the needs of our communities, and the most effective and efficient opportunities to use prevention resources.

This four-part webinar series will provide an overview of the importance of data in the field of substance use prevention. It will explain how data supports evidence-based research, describe how to find and understand different data sources, and provide practical tips and methods for using and sharing data. The fourth part of the series will be an interactive learning lab to practice data-related skills.

Everyday Sustainability: Building a Foundation for Sustainable Prevention Throughout the SPF

Everyday Sustainability: Building a Foundation for Sustainable Prevention Throughout the SPF

Sustainability is one of the overarching principles of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). It sits in the middle of the Framework touching every step of the SPF. Yet we often fail to consider sustainability in our daily work. Sustainable, community-driven, outcome-focused substance misuse prevention isn’t built in the last 6 months of a grant cycle. Creating sustainable prevention happens every day, in every step of the SPF process. In this 90-minute webinar, we will explore how to build sustainability into each step of the SPF process through our daily prevention work.

Novel Digital Interactive Theater-based Intervention to Promote Empathy, Mental, and emotional Wellbeing Among AANHPI Communities

Novel Digital Interactive Theater-based Intervention to Promote Empathy, Mental, and emotional Wellbeing Among AANHPI Communities

Yale Compassionate Home, Action Together (CHATogether) is a novel community-based digital program that promotes empathy and emotional wellness through interactive theater (Song J, 2022). Using interactive theater adopted from the Theater of Oppressed, we aim to promote empathy and communication skills among AANHPI children, adolescents, and families.

Components of the Yale CHATogether program will be introduced. Participants will learn about the five stages of skit production including topic identification/collaborators, scene planning, improvisation, writing, and community engagement. We will also share our qualitative study to measure impacts of theater-based intervention in AANHPI communities.

We will live perform a theatrical vignette depicting challenging communication within AANHPI family. First, the problematic scenario will be presented. Second, a child psychiatrist will provide moderation to process and to mentalize the perspectives of teen and parent. Third, actors re-do the scenario after incorporating more effective communication skills leading to a modified outcome. With facilitator guidance, audience will then divided into breakout room to meet and share their experiences related to the skit.

Youth anxiety, stress, and worry: What is typical

Youth anxiety, stress, and worry: What is typical

It is estimated that one in five youth will suffer from some type of mental health disorder by age 18. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders, affecting 31.9% of youth, and is often associated with other mental health concerns like depression and suicide (Merikangas, 2010). There are modular youth treatments that build youth skills to address these concerns. This training will provide resources to mental health and school professionals on identifying anxiety in youth and understanding different symptoms as they relate to typical developmental trajectory. The training will also provide strategies to address worry in youth, especially youth of color, with free resources to help in the identification and treatment of anxiety disorders. An important emphasis will focus on culturally adaptive anxiety and how to best meet youth needs.

Stigma and bias in behavioral health

Stigma and bias in behavioral health

Racial and use bias has been demonstrated in the research related to behavioral health and medically assisted therapy. The conclusion that has been drawn is that even well-meaning providers and staff hold biases that impact how and to whom they offer care and medicinal support for substance use disorder (SUD). This lecture explores this research and supports participants in reflecting on, identifying, and mitigating this reality so as to offer equitable respect and support for everyone living with SUD.
