2019 Monitoring the Future data shows increase in youth marijuana vaping

The 2019 Monitoring the Future (MTF) data, released by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), shows that youth marijuana vaping is becoming more prevalent. In particular, "After remaining mostly stable for many years, daily use of marijuana went up significantly since 2018 among eighth and 10th graders–now at 1.3% and 4.8% respectively." 

CDC releases Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on risk factors for vaping-associated lung injury

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report November 8, 2019 on vaping-associated lung injury. Most U.S. patients with e-cigarette, or vaping, product use–associated lung injury (EVALI) report using tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products. Product use behaviors that increase risk for EVALI are unknown.

Flavored vapor product ban in effect

At the October 9, 2019 Washington State Board of Health [SBOH] meeting, an emergency rule banning the sale of flavored vapor products in the state was adopted.  It is anticipated to take effect October 10, 2019.

The emergency rule:

1) Imposes a ban on the sale of flavored vaping products, including flavored THC vapor products, in Washington.

FDA reports seizures in some youth and young adult e-cigarette users

The FDA has become aware that some people who use e-cigarettes have experienced seizures, with most reports involving youth or young adult users. Seizures or convulsions are known potential side effects of nicotine toxicity and have been reported in the scientific literature in relation to intentional or accidental swallowing of e-liquid.
