Cannabis use and misuse

Addressing cannabis use and misuse is a state priority.

  • There are 469 locations in Washington to obtain retail and/or medical cannabis (Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board, April 2024).
  • About 1 in 10 cannabis users will develop substance use disorder. For people who begin using before the age of 18, that number is 1 in 6 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
  • Use of high THC products may be especially risk for youth and young adults. The Washington State Legislature recently passed a bill requiring more research into the potential negative effects of high THC cannabis, with reports due between 2025 and 2028.
