Addressing cannabis use and misuse is a state priority.
- There are 469 locations in Washington to obtain retail and/or medical cannabis (Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board, April 2024).
- About 1 in 10 cannabis users will develop substance use disorder. For people who begin using before the age of 18, that number is 1 in 6 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
- Use of high THC products may be especially risk for youth and young adults. The Washington State Legislature recently passed a bill requiring more research into the potential negative effects of high THC cannabis, with reports due between 2025 and 2028.
Cannabis use in Washington State:
- 8 percent of 10th grade students report using cannabis in the past 30 days (Healthy Youth Survey, 2023).
- 2 percent of 10th grade students reported using hemp-derived THC products, like delta-8 THC (Healthy Youth Survey, 2023).
- About 1 in 4 10th grade students thought there was a slight risk or no risk of using cannabis regularly (Healthy Youth Survey, 2023).
