Cannabis Safely campaign launched by Department of Health
The Washington State Department of Health is excited to announce the launch of a new adult education campaign, Cannabis Safely. While HCA’s CPWI program focuses primarily on promoting prevention messages to children and youth, this campaign is intended for those 21 and over. The purpose is to educate adults of legal age to consume cannabis about the risks, rules, and responsibilities of using cannabis in Washington state.
Informed by research with English and Spanish-speaking cannabis consumers and input from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, Washington State Traffic Safety Commission, other local health and safety partners, and industry representatives, the campaign reminds people to:
- Properly secure cannabis products to prevent youth and pet access
- Plan their ride home before they use
- Be aware of the potential health impacts
- Only purchase cannabis from licensed retailers
- Check labels and learn about products before using—especially High THC products (35%+)
- Avoiding mixing cannabis with other substances like alcohol and prescription medications
- Understand the laws around legal consumption
The campaign features videos, banner ads, and social media in English and Spanish to reach people online, as well as a printed booklet that can be ordered from the ADAI Clearinghouse (currently available in English). All assets direct people to visit CannabisSafelyWA.org (English) and CannabisConSeguridadWA.org (Spanish) for more information.
A toolkit of materials (password: CannabisSafelyWA) is available for partners to use assets across Washington state. If adult cannabis use is prevalent for your community and your coalition members are interested in educational materials for adults, this toolkit may be of resource for you.
Please note, this campaign in not intended for a general youth audience. If you have questions, contact CannabisSafely@doh.wa.gov.
