Hypofrontality: Effects of Marijuana on the Growing Brain
This presentation examines how marijuana use and other high-risk behaviors disrupt adolescent brain development, particularly the prefrontal cortex responsible for judgment, impulse control, attention, and decision-making. Research shows early cannabis use correlates with weaker executive functioning, learning inefficiencies, and altered brain maturation patterns during this critical period. Dr. Collier will discuss a comprehensive, brain-based prevention approach that strengthen executive functioning through consistent skill-building, supportive environments, and developmentally appropriate interventions from childhood through adolescence. Evidence demonstrates prevention approaches promoting self-regulation, planning, stress reduction, and healthy decision-making improve long-term outcomes and reduce risk behaviors.
