Social media in youth/community prevention: How to and when not to

Xander Cook and Adriana Avelar team up to provide guidance on how to make the most of social media in youth/community prevention. They will cover the fundamentals of effective messaging, pros and cons of each social media platform, and Adriana and Xander will have a conversation sharing practices that see success as recently as this year. The conversation will also cover how to compensate youth for posts, engage with local influencers, and access high quality social media toolkits.

Adriana Avelar has dedicated 13 years to the Department of Health (DOH), bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to her role. Currently, Adriana serves as the cannabis health educator in DOH'sHealth Promotion & Education section. Her role focuses on the statewide cannabis campaigns that vary across the life span.

Xander Cook is a passionate youth leadership specialist with a proven track record of engaging youth for 15 years as a trainer/presenter in prevention and as youth program coordinator in Washougal. He believes in doing things that evidence says works, he is a recipient of CADCA’s Outstanding Youth award. Xander specializes in training leadership, youth engagement, prevention science, public speaking and loves to apply his dynamic training and speaking style to create customized training to meet the needs of his participants.
