Washington Reading Corps Background:

The Washington Reading Corps (WRC) is operated in partnership with Employment Security Department, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instructions (OSPI) and the Washington Commission for National and Community Services (WCNCS).  For the current program year, the WRC placed 250 members within the pre-school through grade twelve literacy systems.  The goal is to improve the reading abilities of struggling readers through research-based tutoring and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, business and state partners and the federal AmeriCorps program.  WRC members help to improve literacy skills, oral language, and participate in Kindergarten readiness.  In addition, WRC serves students in early learning environments through grade twelve.  Members also give parents and families support through outreach and education activities.

Request for Proposal Overview:

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Washington Reading Corps (WRC) will officially release the WRC RFP May 15, 2012 on iGrants and applications are due June 7, 2012.  Awards will be announced June 15, 2012.

Any public school or non-profit or government organizations operating a pre-school program utilizing research-based pre-school curriculum within Washington State may apply.  Consideration will be given to high-poverty schools and early learning settings with literacy programs that use a multi-level instructional model (such as Response to Intervention and the K-12 Reading Model).
