October is Substance Use Prevention Month!

As we observe Substance Use Prevention Month this October, we are reminded of the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent substance misuse and its damaging effects on individuals, families, and our communities. This month encourages awareness, education, and community engagement, urging us to have honest conversations about the risks associated with substance misuse and the resources available to support healthy lifestyles. Together, we can create a safer, healthier Washington.

How can I get involved?

There are lots of opportunities and ways to participate in Prevention Month:

  • Spread the word on social media. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) has a Substance Use Prevention Month toolkit that features social media shareables, graphics, flyers, and more!
  • Share your prevention story. Join SAMHSA and prevention partners across the country in celebrating Prevention Month by sharing your prevention story on social media using the hashtag, #MyPreventionStory. Visit SAMHSA's #MyPreventionStory page for examples and creative ideas to help you get started!
  • Use HCA's Substance Use Prevention Month virtual meeting background to raise awareness and show your support.
  • Attend the Monday, October 21 webinar to learn how hospitals can support Take Back Day. Join the Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) and the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA), from 2-3 p.m., to learn about more about Start With One, HCA’s prescription opioid misuse prevention campaign, and how hospitals can leverage this campaign to reduce opioid-related harm. Register or learn more!
  • Participate in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 26. Consider hosting or volunteering at a Take Back Day event or safely dispose of your expired or unneeded prescription medications. Visit medtakebackwashington.org to find a permanent safe disposal location or Take Back Day event near you!
  • Visit the Northwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) website to expand your prevention knowledge. You can explore educational materials, access resources, and even register for upcoming webinars and training!

See you at the Prevention Summit!

We'll be closing out Prevention Month with the 2024 Washington State Prevention Summit on Wednesday, October 30 and Thursday, October 31, in Seattle, WA. Each year, the summit provides an opportunity for prevention partners to attend insightful workshops, participate in engaging forums, and network with others in the field. We look forward to seeing you there!
