Addressing young adult mental health and substance misuse: Additional considerations for coping and stress management

The College Coalition on Substance misuse, Advocacy, and Prevention (CCSAP) has historically focused on high-risk events and high-risk times of year (e.g., speakers on Spring Break interventions, 4/20, 21st birthdays, etc.). At the end of next week, a timely CCSAP webinar/meeting will be held to discuss another potentially high-risk time of year.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) partnered with the Census Bureau on a Household Pulse Survey that was a primary source of data related to mental health, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Data have shown that 18-29 year olds have had higher endorsement of symptoms of anxiety disorder and of depressive disorder than any other age group. And, since the launch of the survey, the two-week window for which the rates of anxiety were the highest they’ve been in the past 5 years was the period surrounding the 2020 Presidential Election (51.7% of all 18-29 year-olds).

With another election on the horizon, followed by the holidays (which can also be challenging for the students we support), please join us on Friday, October 18, noon to 1:00 p.m. PT with Dr. Jennifer Cadigan, who will present, “Addressing young adult mental health and substance misuse: Additional considerations for coping and stress management.”
