Understanding Kratom is a multi-part educational webinar series designed to provide policymakers, families, community leaders, researchers and members of the public with evidence-based information on kratom, emerging kratom-derived products, and related policy considerations.

The series aims to clarify scientific evidence, emerging risks, and regulatory challenges while centering youth protection and public health. The sessions are designed to be accessible to a mixed audience, balancing technical accuracy with plain-language explanations.

Following the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what kratom is and how it has been traditionally used, including its botanical origin and how kratom products have evolved in the U.S. marketplace.
  • Differentiate between traditional kratom leaf products and kratom‑related derivatives, with particular emphasis on 7‑hydroxymitragynine (7‑OH) and other concentrated or chemically altered products.
  • Explain the basic pharmacology of kratom and kratom‑derived alkaloids in plain language, including how these substances interact with the body and why certain derivatives may pose heightened risks.
  • Summarize current evidence on patterns of use, dosing, adverse effects, and reported harms, identifying emerging public‑health concerns associated with high‑potency and altered kratom products, including issues related to product variability, labeling, and consumer understanding.
  • Understand the role of ongoing and upcoming research, including clinical trials and surveillance efforts, and why continued research is essential to evidence‑informed policy and practice.
  • Explain the role of lived experience in complementing scientific evidence and policy discussions, particularly in understanding how kratom use and dependence can affect individuals and families in real‑world settings.
