Guiding Good Choices Training of Workshop Leaders
Guiding Good Choices© (GGC) is an evidence-based program for parents/caregivers of youth ages 9-14. The primary goal is to create strong family bonds that motivate youth to follow family guidelines to increase the chance of better health and educational outcomes.
WHO SHOULD USE GGC?
Those who are working with parents of 9 – 14 year olds including; schools, social workers, home visitors, family service workers, public health agencies, preventionists, and prevention coalitions.
GGC WORKSHOP SERIES
The workshop series for parents/caregivers is delivered over five weeks (six if delivered virtually). Each session is two hours and covers:
- Why parents may need new skills as their children enter adolescence
- The Social Development Strategy, and how it relates to parenting
- Setting and using family guidelines for behavior
- Managing conflict and expressing anger constructively
- Teaching children refusal skills
- Involving children in the family
TRAINING OF WORKSHOP LEADERS
This training prepares participants to lead Guiding Good Choices workshops in their community.
Participants will learn how the curriculum supports families by providing information and teaching skills that help caregivers promote family bonding through use of the Social Development Strategy. The training covers:
- Keys to successful delivery
- Facilitation skills
- The Social Development Strategy
- Risk and protective factor-focused prevention
- How to handle difficult questions
- Empowering parents and caregivers to make their own decisions
Throughout the sessions participants will experience various approaches to learning including direct instruction, role-playing, and reflective dialogue. This 19-hour virtual training is delivered over one week.
COST
Training cost is $850/person which includes one copy of the Workshop Leader Guide.
