We are recruiting for Cohort 14 of the DBHR-WSU Prevention Fellowship! The Fellowship is a unique opportunity to participate in state government work and engage with Washington State’s efforts towards substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and mental health (MH) promotion. There are opportunities for both bachelor’s level and graduate/post-graduate level Fellows to join this cohort. Both positions are full-time (100% FTE), paid, and temporary (ending September 2027). Applications will close at the end of the day on November 3, 2026.

The Prevention Fellows will be hired and managed by Washington State University (WSU), and their daily duties will be co-managed in conjunction with the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR) Prevention Section. Fellows will learn and disseminate information about evidence-based prevention programs supported by prevention science research, in collaboration with DBHR Prevention Section staff, WSU researchers, and WA community members. Fellows will work closely with DBHR staff on special projects assigned based on candidate expertise and project need, from supporting community prevention providers, managing project and contract to critical areas in the prevention field related to research and evaluation including Evidence-Based Programs (EBP), surveillance efforts, prevention science training to aid community strategic planning work, and evidence-based practices within school-based services.

Within these areas, Fellows may work on several diverse projects related to project and contract management, community organizing training and technical assistance for community providers and prevention professionals statewide, prevention data and evaluation, and school-based prevention services. Examples of Fellows’ work might include coordinating / providing technical assistance to communities that are working towards wellness through SUD prevention and MH promotion, the development of prevention best practices documentation; supporting or coordination of workgroups; supporting review of evidence-based programs; coordinating program nominations and summaries of successful local EBP implementation efforts; and developing training curriculum and hosting trainings.

The fellowship will start as soon as application screening/hiring is complete, and it is expected to end in September of 2027. While this position is hybrid, there is an in-person component to this work; the Fellow must be able to be present in Olympia, WA on a regular basis.
