Ethics in the Substance Use Disorder Prevention Field (Part 1)

The goal of this interactive training is to help substance use disorder prevention practitioners make ethical choices in their field and practice. We will discuss the Six Principles in the Prevention Code of Ethics in large and small groups, walk through the decision-making process similar to using the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to use when faced with ethical challenges, and discuss the implications of ethics for our field.

Presented by: Alicia Hughes is a Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) and has been working in the prevention field since the 2010s. Starting in California, she supported individuals with technical assistance and training to obtain their state certifications in addiction counseling. From 2018 to 2024, Alicia served as a Supervisor for the Washington State Health Care Authority/Prevention Section, leading the substance use disorder prevention workforce system, implementing the WA State Fellowship Program, and managing federal prevention grants from SAMHSA. Now, Alicia is the Senior Training/Technical Assistance Specialist with both the Strategic Prevention Technical Assistance Center (SPTAC) and Northwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) supporting Regions 9 and 10 to build organizational capacity of SAMHSA prevention grantees. ‎ ‎
