Overcoming Challenges Prevention-Focused Community Organizers are Facing in 2025

What we are all becoming aware of is that what has happened so far in 2025 to prevention and public health is likely not the end of the surprises and impacts on our work. And, again, it's tempting to feel overwhelmed by all of the changes and unpredictability. But there are also some exciting new opportunities for working with your communities that have presented themselves. For instance, there is a new law that changes the responsibility for most of the administration for cannabis store signage to cities and counties rather than the Liquor and Cannabis Board. The new law takes effect January 1, 2026 and there is a huge opportunity to work with cities and counties to help ensure that their regulations regarding business signage consider cannabis stores and that there are staff whose responsibility it will be to enforce the local regulations. And there are other new opportunities for community outreach and organization as well.
