CSAP prepares new resource kit focusing on the top health issues for LGBT populations

The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) has released to states a new communication training initiative, "Prevention Works!Top Health Issues for LGBT Populations Resource Kit".The materials will be posted to The Athena Forum website for use by prevention professionals in the state in the near future following review by the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR).

Emily Novick, Manager of the CSAP-NPN Prevention Works! communications training initiative, says the resource kit contains summaries of the latest scientific findings based on information included in Healthy People 2020. The new materials include separate articles on LGBT terminology as well as the health of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals. There also is an article discussing gender identity, selected web-based resources, and a PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes. Users are encouraged to tailor these materials to meet specific communications training needs.

The new materials will support actions taken to support the eight strategic initiatives of the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) strategic plan. Several action steps associated with SAMHSA's strategic initiatives address LGBT behavioral health.
