The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) Utah is a parenting and family skills training program for high-risk and general population families, offered in various formats. SFP Utah is unique in that the whole family attends together and practices new relationship skills in a group setting. It is designed to significantly improve parenting skills and family relationships, reduce child maltreatment, children's problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug use, and to improve social competencies and school performance. Three main versions are currently offered by the program developer, Dr. Karol Kumpfer.
First, SFP 0-16 is the original 14-week curriculum for high-risk families (e.g., family history of substance use disorder or violence), with developmentally appropriate adaptations covering multiple age categories from birth through age 16. This version’s curriculum and materials are available in digital download format.
Second, SFP 7-17 is an 11-week curriculum designed for all families (e.g., general population or higher-risk, depending on group composition) with youth ages 7-17. It is available in both online and in-person formats.
Third, SFP Home-Use DVD is a self-paced adaptation of SFP 7-17 for all families. It contains additional content on mindfulness, anger management, and the developing teen brain and is available in English and Spanish. This version is considered innovative for DBHR grantees due to inconclusive evaluation results.
