Webinar: Supporting resilience and recovery in LGBTQ+ Communities of Color

The experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) people seeking recovery from trauma, mental health conditions, and/or substance use disorders are distinct, complex, and diverse. For those who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color—especially those who are part of poor or low wealth communities—the intersecting stressors of racism, homophobia, transphobia, and classism present formidable barriers to community and care. These include prejudice and exclusion from community institutions—such as churches and schools—and a lack of awareness and expertise in mainstream treatment facilities and recovery groups. In response, LGBTQ+ communities of color have developed community specific and peer-centered recovery and mutual aid initiatives and have partnered with providers to establish LGBTQ+ focused treatment and recovery initiatives.

Join this free, interactive virtual conversation to hear how LGBTQ+ communities of color support community members and advocate for expanded access to recovery support services. Our presenters draw from many years of experience with the House and Ballroom community—established by and for LGBTQ+ people of color. Their wide-ranging expertise includes efforts to address recovery-related concerns within the context of both the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics.
