Best practices for supporting and affirming LGBTQI+ youth: updates from SAMHSA and the field

Best practices for supporting and affirming LGBTQI+ youth: updates from SAMHSA and the field

Like all youth, LGBTQI+ young people (individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning, intersex and other sexual and gender minorities) deserve to grow up in supportive environments that allow them to thrive without discrimination. When seeking mental health and substance use treatment, LGBTQI+ youth and their families deserve evidence-based care from knowledgeable providers.

Hosted by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, featuring insights and updates from Brian Altman, Dr. Judith Glassgold and other experts from the field, this webinar will provide an overview of key scientific updates and implications for clinical care, public policy, and empowering families to advocate for their LGBTQI+ youth. The session will give mental health and substance use treatment providers the knowledge and resources to implement evidence-based and intersectional therapeutic approaches with LGBTQI+ youth, and to ultimately support these youth and their families in reaching their human potential.

Ethics in Prevention Foundations (asynchronous virtually moderated course)

Ethics in Prevention Foundations (asynchronous virtually moderated course)

As substance misuse prevention professionals, we regularly face situations that require us to make ethical decisions. Often it is clear how to act ethically; sometimes it is not.

This two-week, asynchronous moderated course, adapted from the original Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT) course, explores the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics, brought to life with realistic examples designed to enhance participant understanding. The course also introduces a decision-making process to help practitioners apply this code to a variety of ethical dilemmas, and an online discussion area to facilitate discussion with other course participants.

DBHR RFA pre-application conference

DBHR RFA pre-application conference

This is the pre-application conference for DBHR's recently announced RFA

The Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR) is proud to announce a request for applications (RFA) to solicit applications from organizations interested in participating in a project to implement substance use disorder prevention services, focusing on substance use disorder (SUD) related to opioids and cannabis, mental health promotion, and suicide prevention in Washington State.

The purpose of this funding is to increase community capacity to implement direct prevention service programs to communities experiencing the highest need and risk. HCA will award multiple contracts to community-based organizations (CBOs) as defined above to include tribal governments or urban Indian organizations (UIOs), public or private CBOs, and government agencies (e.g., school districts, law enforcement agencies, city/county, Educational Service Districts (ESDs), behavioral health organizations, youth and family serving organizations, and primary care organizations).

Awarded applicants will be required to provide direct services to the communities that they serve. These direct services are required to be evidence-based programs (EBPs) and research-based programs (RBPs). These direct service programs should be selected and implemented in a way that ensures quality and culturally appropriate implementation. Awarded applicants will also be required to meet additional requirements dependent upon the fund source(s) awarded. Awarded applicants will implement services on a regular annual basis.

Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to register as a vendor on Washington’s Electronic Bid System and to download a copy of the RFA from WEBS, in order to view any amendments that are issued by HCA which may modify the terms of this RFA.

Applicants who have questions and/or requests for clarifications regarding the RFA must submit them via email no later than June 9, 2023, for the first round, and June 23, 2023, for the final round. All correspondence regarding this solicitation must reference the RFA number in the subject line. Emails should be sent to Alexander Agidius.

Completed application packets are due July 16, 2022.

Developing culture champions to promote an inclusive and welcoming organizational culture

Developing culture champions to promote an inclusive and welcoming organizational culture

Incompass Human Services – powered by its dedicated, diverse and inclusive Care Champion workforce – has historically experienced low vacancy and turnover rates in comparison to similar organizations. In fact, the agency has grown continuously while maintaining great stability in its workforce, adding 54 new positions in the first quarter of 2023, with a turnover rate of 2.5% in that period.

Several years ago, staff from various positions throughout the agency formed a team to articulate shared values and develop a vision for the Incompass culture. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) were determined to be paramount to the Incompass Care Champion culture. As a result, the Incompass Culture Team developed a powerful culture statement; a Cultural Competency, Diversity and Inclusion Plan; and a Care Champion Engagement Survey that is now completed by the workforce annually to solicit input to further enhance the impact of the agency culture.

Please join us for an energizing “virtual pride tea” with Michael Bloom, leader of the Incompass Culture Team initiative and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, who will discuss the Culture Champion “mojo” and provide actionable strategies to promote an inclusive and welcoming agency culture that magnetizes new workers and retains dedicated, high-quality staff members.

  • Overcome the challenges of modelling complex interventions

This training will outline key considerations and provide practical strategies that can help those engaged in performance and quality improvement (PQI) work to identify and mitigate some limitations of logic models. This webinar aims to increase confidence in creating and using logic models for programs/service delivery. The presenter will expand on how a basic logic model can be used in:

  • Effective program evaluation
  • Collecting, analyzing, and providing data/results to share with stakeholders
  • Learning to continually improve programs

The presenter also will take participants through the pitfalls associated with creating a logic model, provide examples of logic models for social and human service-related programs, and show how to expand the logic models’ use in identifying outcomes and collecting and analyzing data that allow for clear results and/or continuous improvement of services. Exercises and examples that focus on the development of a simple service/program logic model to a more complex organizational logic model, including practical examples and a template for developing a logic model.

Substance use and HIV: The importance of action and addressing disparities

Substance use and HIV: The importance of action and addressing disparities

Course description:

This webinar will review the connections between substance use and HIV. It will summarize the research on how substance use can increase the risk of contracting HIV and present the most recent data on co-occurring prevalence rates. The webinar will examine the disproportionate impact of HIV among LGBTQ, BIPOC, Hispanic, and other populations nationwide and in the Central East region. It will discuss the importance of expanding services and key considerations for serving people living with HIV. The webinar will also review examples of evidence-based strategies.

During this webinar, prevention experts will explore the data and research on the intersection of substance use and suicide and cover identified evidence-based substance use prevention programs that address risk of suicide, and potential opportunities for collaborations that exist.

The ongoing, increasing rate of suicide across the United States is a major public health concern. Research shows that substance use can increase suicidal ideation and suicide risk, making it a relevant issue across the behavioral health continuum. Many who die by suicide share risk factors with people living with a substance use disorder, especially opioid or alcohol use disorders. Prevention professionals across behavioral health fields should collaborate to reduce the prevalence of both issues.
