Cultural Considerations for Addressing Mental Health and Racial Discrimination in Latino Children and Youth

Cultural Considerations for Addressing Mental Health and Racial Discrimination in Latino Children and Youth

Latinx youths are at significant risk for mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts. Latinx youths are also less likely to access culturally responsive mental health services and continue to be undiagnosed or untreated. This can lead to negative outcomes such as negative interactions at school and with authorities, increased disconnection from family and society, and exposure to the criminal justice system. The presenter will discuss factors that affect Hispanic and Latino youth mental health and academic performance, the use of culturally centered interventions in school mental health, and how to engage effectively Hispanic and Latino youth and families in school mental health treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify trends in mental health disorders, including suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
  • Discuss culture-specific risk and protective factors associated with mental health.
  • Discuss cultural elements that inform mental health assessment and treatment for Hispanic/Latino youth.

Infant mental health training (clinical)

Infant mental health training (clinical)

The Washington State Legislature created Mental health assessment for young children to support infant and early childhood providers in using best practices with very young children, including training in the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood (DC: 0–5).

The DC: 0-5 uses a developmentally-appropriate and contextually-grounded approach to consider how relationships and environmental factors contribute to the child’s social and emotional well-being and developmental progress. The Clinical DC: 0-5 training is designed to support mental health professionals in developing in-depth knowledge of the approach and utilizing this system in their work with children birth through age five.

Understanding Colorism and Addressing Implicit Biases with Latino Families and Communities

Understanding Colorism and Addressing Implicit Biases with Latino Families and Communities

In 2017, APA released the second iteration of the multicultural guidelines, titled Multicultural Guidelines: An Ecological Approach to Context, Identity, and Intersectionality. The revised guidelines build on current literature, present an ecological model emphasizing individual’s self-definition within various contexts, and address the intersectionality of reference group identities, including race, age, gender, immigration status, language, ability status, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, gender identity, spirituality, education, and employment.

In this workshop, an expert in Latinx psychology will introduce and address the guidelines relevance to Latinx children and their families. Through case studies, participants will consider applications for practice. The workshop will include both didactic and conversational aspects, allowing for consideration of how the guidelines can be best utilized within professional practice with Latinx children, families, and communities.
