Exploring the Legal Landscape of Delta-8 THC and Similar Cannabis Products

Exploring the Legal Landscape of Delta-8 THC and Similar Cannabis Products

Often promoted as less-potent alternatives to cannabis, Delta-8 THC products have seen a rapid growth in the U.S. marketplace and are showing up in commercial tobacco retail stores across the nation in the form of e-cigarettes, combustible products, beverages, and snacks. The manufacturing of Delta-8 THC and similar hemp-derived cannabis products is unregulated and can involve the use of harmful chemicals in uncontrolled settings. In addition, these products can have psychoactive and intoxicating effects and can pose risks to young people, pets, and others.

Offered by the Mitchell Hamline School of Law's Public Health Law Center, this webinar will discuss the mechanics and chemistry behind Delta- 8 THC and similar novel cannabinoids, the legal landscape, and efforts to regulate these products to protect vulnerable communities and public health.

A team of faculty and staff from Washington State University with experience in YPAR will facilitate the meetings. We will prioritize discussing topics that are most relevant to the group - so please bring any questions you have about YPAR regardless of what stage of planning you are at! We will use these sessions to problem solve and brainstorm practical strategies for recruitment, program planning, developing youth-adult partnerships, and more. You are not required to attend all sessions, but we hope to see you as often as you are available!

Those completely new to YPAR are also welcome to attend and learn more. Please also consider joining the YPAR Community of Practice listserv. Joining the listerv will give you access to recordings of prior Introduction to YPAR training sessions. You can register for the YPAR Community of Practice listerv here: https://wsu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_elCjreRoc8lcRKK

Emergency Department-Initiated Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder (webinar)

Emergency Department-Initiated Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder (webinar)

This webinar, presented by Gail D'Onofrio, MD of Yale School of Medicine, will focus on the crucial role of the emergency department (ED) in recognizing and treating opioid use disorder (OUD) patients with evidence-based medications for addiction treatment. The opioid epidemic combined with the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly escalated the need to mitigate the morbidity and mortality associated with rising rates of fentanyl use. Dr. D'Onofrio will share data supporting the use of buprenorphine in the ED and discuss the consequences of not initiating treatment, barriers to implementation of ED buprenorphine, and components of successful integration of an ED program with community partnerships. She will also share current research by emergency physicians regarding innovative strategies like high-dose induction and use of an extended release 7-day formulation of buprenorphine.
Learning objectives

•    Evaluate at least 2 outcomes for opioid use disorder in patients receiving buprenorphine through the Emergency Department and discuss supporting evidence
•    Identify at least 2 barriers and 2 solutions to initiating buprenorphine in the Emergency Department
•    Apply at least 2 harm reduction strategies and components of the buprenorphine integration pathway
•    Propose at least 2 innovative solutions for buprenorphine induction in the ED including different formulations of buprenorphine and high dose strategies
