Mental Health First Aid - Adult curriculum

Mental Health First Aid - Adult curriculum

You are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack.  Learn how to help a friend, family member, coworker or neighbor in need. The National Council for Behavioral Health certifies individuals throughout the nation to provide Mental Health First Aid courses to prepare their communities with the knowledge and skills to help individuals who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  Identified on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, the training helps the public better identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses.

Students must complete a 2-hour self paced course prior to attending this training.
Students will receive a link to this 2-hour training from the Instructor after successful registration into the course. This email will be sent to the email address provided to us during the time of registration.
Once students have successfully completed the 2-hour self paced training course, students will receive a second email with a zoom link to allow them access to their virtual classroom on the scheduled class date.

Textbook & Cost:

Textbooks will be available electronically and will be sent within one of the two emails that you will receive from the Instructor.
There is no cost to this course as tuition is generously supported by AHECWW.

Certificate Requirements:

Students must complete both pre-work and live session to receive a certificate.

Webinar: Youth mental health first aid training

Webinar: Youth mental health first aid training

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges and substance use disorders in young people. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to a young person who may be developing a mental health or substance use issue and help connect them to the appropriate care.

First Aiders will complete a 2-hour self-paced class and then participate in a 5-hour instructor-led class using video conferencing via Zoom.

Participants will be given access to the 2-hour self-paced class two weeks before the training. This is a prerequisite for the 5-hour Zoom training. The self-paced class will need to be completed at least 48 hours before the training.

This training is interactive; please have a microphone and webcam.

Webinar: Native American storytelling: Culture is prevention

Webinar: Native American storytelling: Culture is prevention

This series of sessions features traditional Native American storytelling, along with time for discussion on what can be learned from the stories, as well as the ways these stories can be incorporated by Native American providers into their work with patients.

Please note that while we encourage non-Native providers to attend these sessions to increase your cultural understanding and sensitivity, we ask that out of respect for cultural traditions, you do not use these stories as your own if they are not a part of your culture.

Native storytelling is an long honored way of teaching lessons of life. We, as Native people, need to laugh while learning. For example, laughing at how Coyote makes funny mistakes. This can teach people how to avoid behaving as Coyote does. Further, Native legends can offer stories about Creation or the Trickster. However, some stories can only be told during certain times of the year. For example, Coyote legends are only told during the winter time because that is often when Native people would be in their lodges practicing survival skills to help the tribe thrive in difficult times.

Traditionally, the storyteller needed to be an excellent psychologist and able to understand peoples’ perspectives. A story might be used in treatment to help a patient come to a realization in a culturally informed way.

Webinar: Alcohol prevention is suicide prevention: Understanding the associations between alcohol and suicide

Webinar: Alcohol prevention is suicide prevention: Understanding the associations between alcohol and suicide

Heavy episodic (or “binge” drinking) is associated with higher reports of suicidal thoughts, making a suicide plan, and attempting suicide.  Research has looked at distal risk factors (relatively stable characteristics/events leading up to suicidal behavior) and proximal risk factors (variables that increase risk in the moments before suicidal behavior).  In this presentation, these factors will be reviewed, with a spotlight on how alcohol impacts judgment and decision making directly related to suicide.  Studies that make the assertion that “alcohol prevention is suicide prevention” will be summarized, along with other associated variables.  Implications for prevention and intervention will be discussed.

Webinar: 988 - National Helpline for Mental Health Emergencies

Webinar: 988 - National Helpline for Mental Health Emergencies

A national three-digit 988 behavioral health and suicide prevention crisis hotline is probably the most significant public policy initiative impacting behavioral healthcare since Medicaid expansion. Behavioral health crisis services have never had a moment like this, where the policy forces are aligning at federal state and local levels and are driving positive change.  The implementation of 988 provides us with the opportunity to build-out and finance a statewide behavioral health crisis response system that is on par with the 911 emergency medical management system.

There are many questions that this webinar will address as an initial forum to learn about best practices to apply to 988 crisis response system optimization. Increasing our collective knowledge is best achieved by engaging with subject-matter experts, rather than expending time, energy, or other resources extracting or researching for answers in disconnected and fragmented ways. Session outcomes include new learning and insights to more effectively respond to a rapid 988 implementation trajectory.  Participants will find that the content and interchange of this session is both pragmatic and enriching.

Webinar: Ripple effects mapping

Webinar: Ripple effects mapping

Identifying the impacts of complex community work is often challenging due to the time lag between the work and the ultimate affects to the clients. Ripple Effects Mapping gives you the ability to tell your stories of the direct and indirect impacts of your work, while simultaneously being engaging and fun. It starts with appreciative inquiry interviews in small group settings, before leading a mapping process that involves storytelling in an online group setting. As participants share their experiences with the facilitator, their stories about the accomplishments, partnerships, and contributions are virtually mapped on the screen. At the conclusion, the participants will have a digital map that contains the learning, actions, and condition changes that happened as a result of a program, workshop series, or event.

Webinar: Introducing the International Academy one the Science and Impact of Cannabis

Please join the San Diego County Marijuana Prevention Initiative for a virtual (via Zoom) news conference to introduce a new and unique medical organization, IASIC (International Association on the Science and Impact of Cannabis); doctors educating on marijuana. This news conference will introduce IASIC, discuss current cannabis-related trends in emergency and other medical settings, and make available reliable, peer-reviewed medical resources on the short and long-term consequences of cannabis use.

The IASIC is a medical organization of doctors who educate on marijuana based on the scientific and medical literature. IASIC is a non-partisan and non-political group created to facilitate informed decisions when considering cannabis policy and law. Based on the review of the scientific evidence, we conclude that the public health effects of high potency cannabis are harmful. These growing negative impacts further strain health care and addiction treatment resources to the extent that they far surpass taxation revenues. For more information, please review their website here: https://iasic1.org/

Webinar: Achieving health equity - what's next?

Hosted by the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation. The COVID-19 pandemic placed a spotlight on the shocking health disparities that American communities of color have endured for decades and underscored the need for change. Mortality rates linked to COVID-19 for Native Americans, Latinos and Black Americans are approximately double those of White Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the nation recovers, health experts are taking a close look at addressing the health inequities that contributed to this situation and ensuring that it does not happen again. For this webinar, the National Indian Health Board's CEO, Stacy A. Bohlen, along with other leaders in public health will discuss key issues that harm health in America’s Indigenous, Black and Latino communities, as well as solutions. Read more here.

Webinar: Partnering to strengthen the behavioral health infrastructure and capacity in communities of color

Webinar: Partnering to strengthen the behavioral health infrastructure and capacity in communities of color

More than ever before, the behavioral health services provided by community-based organizations (CBOs) that serve racially/ethnically diverse communities are essential to support the recovery and healing of the people most impacted by COVID-19. Current funding approaches are challenging to navigate. Oftentimes, it is even more difficult for CBOs that don’t have the infrastructure to respond to these opportunities to sustain their work.

Foundations and government agencies are recognizing the importance of funding with flexibility so that CBOs can effectively serve racially/ethnically diverse communities. Funders are establishing relationships with CBOs to drive effective solutions for these communities, while also looking inward to implement changes in their practices and policies. This includes inviting CBOs to provide input on application processes, simplifying the criteria and fields in requests for proposals (RFPs), and ensuring a faster turnaround time to get funds to CBOs.

Join this NNED Virtual Roundtable to consider new ways to tap into philanthropic and governmental funding to meet the behavioral health needs of racially/ethnically diverse communities. Behavioral health-focused CBOs will share how they are leveraging funding opportunities and their successful partnerships with funders — how they were created, cultivated, and grown before and during the pandemic.

Objectives for Part 2

  • Understand how both funders and CBOs are responding to disparities in funding and behavioral health services within the current context of COVID-19.
  • Learn about unique funding partnerships between government agencies/foundations with CBOs serving diverse racial/ethnic communities and underserved populations.
  • Identify fiscal challenges and solutions related to behavioral health services faced by CBOs, including billing and reimbursements.

Webinar: Processing big changes: Grief and loss during COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, lives changed almost overnight. What we originally thought was going to be just a few weeks turned into over a year of deep uncertainty, pain, and grief for many. As the world starts to open back up, most people are still grappling with a number of losses – loved ones, social connections, the normalcy of our pre-pandemic lives, and more.

Even as we get back to “normal,” life will look very different than it did just two years ago. This is a big shift for our brains to handle, and it can bring up a lot of emotions.

Join us for this 60-minute webinar where we will discuss:

  • Grief in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • How to process grief and loss from COVID-19; and

Webinar: Moving forward as a workforce: Reflecting to learn and refocusing to grow

More than a year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are starting to feel the first glimmers of hope that a return to “normal” is on the horizon. As we navigate this latest shift, there is still an overwhelming need to support employees’ mental health. To help, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) at Work created a new toolkit for employers’ use this Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond.

If you enjoy the toolkit, we hope you’ll also consider closing out Mental Health Awareness Month with MHFA for a live webinar focused on 2021 workplace trends, employee wellbeing, and resilience.

The pandemic forced mental health to become a mainstream topic of discussion, and workplace wellbeing will continue to stay center stage as we move forward. We hope you can join us for this event.

Webinar: Stigma, biases and shame: Tobacco use and wellbeing masterclass

Webinar: Stigma, biases and shame: Tobacco use and wellbeing masterclass

Stigma around mental illness and substance use challenges can contribute to increased symptoms and reduced likelihood of receiving and accessing treatment. Individuals who also use tobacco encounter psychosocial factors such as stigma and may experience increased strain on their health and mental wellbeing that impacts their motivation to quit tobacco. Research has shown that addressing biases and shame can increase understanding of symptoms and encourage utilization of services.

Join the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control on Thursday, May 27, from 3 – 5 p.m. ET for a real-time discussion with subject matter experts from the University of California San Francisco and the University of Texas at Austin, Jason M. Satterfield, Ph.D., and Richard Bottner, DHA, PA-C. T

his masterclass will equip you with the knowledge and tools to:
