Webinar: Developing a shared language for diversity, equity and inclusion

Webinar: Developing a shared language for diversity, equity and inclusion

The Opioid Response Network, in partnership with the Harborview Medical Center - Behavioral Health Institute, invites you to join us online for our first session: Developing a Shared Language For Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The purpose of this training is to provide you with an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues. We will explore the potential impact of these issues on our beliefs towards those with backgrounds different from our own and how those beliefs can impact the people we serve and the continuum of care for substance use disorder. We understand that we all have different levels of understanding of these topics. This training is an opportunity to bring our diverse experiences together to sharpen our skills to create more welcoming and inclusive places of business for our staff and clients, as well as look at ways organizations can support DEI efforts.

In this training, we will focus on:
-Reviewing baseline language to ground us in a shared understanding of DEI issues
-Exploring local equity data on the impact of DEI issues on health care access, experiences, and outcomes
-Unpacking myths about DEI and those impacted by these issues
-Reviewing situational examples and their implications for opioid and substance use disorder

Medical professionals, mental health clinicians, social workers and educators are increasingly aware of the need to provide trauma-informed care and services. But these efforts can fall short without system-wide, trauma-responsive approaches and structures in place. In fact, organizational gaps, disconnects or inconsistencies can mean the difference between alleviating a person’s suffering or adding to that suffering. Across the United States, state and local health departments and community power-building organizations are collaborating to challenge the social, environmental, and economic conditions that create health and racial inequities.

This work is more important than ever given the intersecting and cascading crises of COVID-19, police violence, and housing and economic insecurity. Health departments are accountable to these crises and should increasingly seed and nurture collaborations with groups explicitly focused on building community power as a strategy to achieve health equity. In that spirit, this discussion will highlight a framework to approach this work, along with examples of health department and community organizing collaborations.

Webinar: Discussing options and referring adolescents to treatment

Description: One of the largest barriers to providing appropriate substance use services to adolescents is getting them to open up about their use and engage in conversation to reduce or eliminate it, if necessary. The Using SBIRT to Talk to Adolescents about Substance Use four-part webinar series introduces health professionals to the SBIRT model as a way to learn from adolescents about their substance use, talk about what might motivate them to make a decision to reduce or abstain (if needed), and execute a plan to do so.

This fourth webinar in the series outlines how health professionals can connect adolescents who screen at risk for substance use to appropriate treatment. This webinar will demystify the referral to treatment process, providing sample dialogues and tips to facilitate effective linkages and follow-ups. The presenter will also review unique challenges that a health professional might encounter when referring adolescents to treatment, such as confidentiality and push back.

Along with cutting-edge, evidence-based education, the expert presenters will provide sample scripts and role plays so participants gain strategies to use right away with adolescents in many settings. This free education is ideal for anyone who wishes to gain an in-depth understanding of SBIRT and its use with adolescents, designed for both those who are new to SBIRT and for those who want more advanced training beyond an overview.

Learning Objectives: As a result of participating in this webinar, you will:

  • Learn how to provide referrals and facilitate linkages to treatment for adolescents who screen at risk.
  • Understand the importance of follow-up and what to cover during these encounters.

Webinar - Emerging Tobacco Products: What they are, Why are we concerned, and What you can do

New tobacco products are infiltrating the market, including new disposable e-cigarettes, e-cigarettes shaped like watches and other household products, nicotine pouches, nicotine toothpicks, and flavored nicotine gums. Adolescents and young adults are using these products more often than combustible cigarettes. This presentation will provide detailed information on these new products, including nicotine levels, addiction, and other health effects, as well as marketing of these products. The presentation will also provide information on reasons for adolescent use of these products, including flavors, appeal, marketing, perceived reduced harm, stress, anxiety, depression, and misperceptions. There will also be a review of evidence-based resources that can be used to help prevent and reduce use of e-cigarettes, as well as advocacy efforts occurring in the US to reduce use. We will also take a few minutes to discuss the Stanford Tobacco Prevention Toolkit for those who are interested.

This webinar is open to Professionals working in the Substance Abuse Prevention field.
