A focus on infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) has been shown to improve children’s social skills and emotional functioning, promote healthy relationships, reduce challenging behaviors, reduce the number of suspensions and expulsions, improve classroom quality, and reduce provider stress, burnout, and turnover. Age-appropriate assessment and diagnosis are key to providing effective mental health supports for children from birth through age five. 

This overview provides a foundation for understanding the  DC:0-5™ diagnostic system. While clinically focused, it is high level and absolutely, 100%, relevant to prevention work.  It provides some basic understanding of child development, caregiver and child health, and appropriate evidence-based approaches to addressing needs in the community.  

Eligibility
Allied professionals, or individuals whose professional role supports social-emotional well-being and the mental health system of care for children birth through age five enrolled in Apple Health. Some overview trainings may be tailored to professionals in specific roles. Please see the training schedule below for a training that will be best for you.

Cost
Free through June 30, 2023 for Apple Health mental health providers and allied professionals serving children birth through age five in Washington.

In this virtual presentation, we will look at the role of classical conditioning (and, therefore, the role of environment) in potential overdose situations, which highlights possible risks associated with spring break, 21st birthday celebrations, and even starting school. Opportunities for prevention and intervention will be discussed.

Many trainings and resources focus on what research has shown to be effective to prevent substance misuse. We also know through research what is NOT effective in preventing substance misuse and in some cases is harmful. Yet communities across the nation continue to implement these ineffective and sometimes counterproductive strategies. The focus of this webinar will be on identifying these ineffective approaches. We will also spend time discussing strategies prevention professionals can use to address the resistance often expressed by individuals and organizations reluctant to change long-standing, well-liked prevention practices.

GHEA and CADCA’s Evaluation and Research Team present the latest installment of the Research Into Action webinar series featuring Dr. Samantha Puvanesarajah and Michael Tynan, MPH from the CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health. In this webinar, the speakers will present results from their recent article which reports estimates of self-reported public indoor and outdoor secondhand smoke and secondhand aerosol exposures among U.S. youth, using data from the 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey. They will also discuss policy implications for clean air legislation. As the tobacco product landscape evolves, it remains important to modernize and update smoke-free policies to protect people from these exposures from all products, in all settings. 

In this presentation about opioid use disorder (OUD), we aim to share decision making strategies on medication therapy, discuss the pathways for patients and advocates to access care, and dispel common myths surrounding OUD. We hope to engage the audience and leave listeners feeling more prepared and informed on how to help our patients with OUD by utilizing harm-reduction and behavior health interventions in combination with pharmacotherapy.

This summit will convene leaders and stakeholders in Tribal health equity to build a path forward for health equity in Indian Country. Building on the discussions of drivers of health inequities from the May 13 Inter-Tribal World Café on Health Equity, this summit will examine important questions about how to advance health equity in a meaningful way. The summit will include a discussion on the appropriate role of federal government agencies in supporting Tribal health equity, with a special focus on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Most calls to the Washington Poison Center regarding older adults (ages 60+) are about mistakes with medications. In recent years, however, the poison center has noted increasing calls about intentional exposure reasons, including substance use and self-harm or suspected suicide. Join the Washington Poison Center’s Medical Director and one of the center’s Public Health Educators as they discuss call trends, the unique concerns for older adults with intentional exposures, common substances and their considerations, and harm reduction strategies for providers, older adults, and/or their loved ones.

Or, just want to learn more about the people behind the Washington Poison Center's services? Come meet our toxicologists! Join the Washington Poison Center's Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, and one of their call center pharmacists to learn about toxicology, why they pursued a career in this field, and their favorite aspects of their jobs. This discussion is part of the overdose Prevention, Harm Reduction, and Treatment webinar series and will take place on Facebook and YouTube. 

This two-hour, virtual interactive workshop led by The Montana Institute will provide an overview of the Science of the Positive, Positive Community Norms, and Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) frameworks and how they can be used in harmony to promote child development, grow Positive Childhood Experiences, and promote a healing-centered approach to help children and adults increase resiliency. 

The workshop will include current research-findings and applications of these frameworks and will provide participants with opportunities to consider and discuss how they might advance these applications in their own unique contexts.

In February of 2021 with a small grant from the local health authority, the NW Instituto Latino de Adicciones (NWIL), opened the first and still only one of its kind culturally and linguistically specific Recovery Community Organization for Latinos in Oregon. This project was the culmination of years of hard work by a dedicated group of volunteer Latinx recovery support professionals (Counselors, Peers, Case Managers) that shared one mission, to better meet the specific recovery needs of the Latino community in Oregon. Success was not ensured, but within 7 weeks of opening the Recovery Drop-In Center had 14 culturally and linguistically specific mutual aid/support groups, had over 900 visitors come through the door, had engaged over 32 clients in formal recovery support/peer mentoring, and had become a hub for the Latino recovery community in the area.

This presentation will talk about how we did what we did, what we learned about launching this project and what we think can help others launch similar projects.
