Ethics in Prevention: A Guide for Substance Misuse Prevention Practitioners

Ethics in Prevention: A Guide for Substance Misuse Prevention Practitioners

As substance misuse prevention professionals, we regularly face situations that require us to make ethical decisions. Often it is clear how to act ethically; sometimes it is not.

This moderated online course explores the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics, brought to life with realistic examples designed to enhance participant understanding. The course also introduces a decision-making process to help practitioners apply this code to a variety of ethical dilemmas, and an online discussion area to facilitate discussion with other course participants.

Office of Tribal Affairs and Policy (OTAP) Harm Reduction Summit

Office of Tribal Affairs and Policy (OTAP) Harm Reduction Summit

August 3 & 4, 8:30-2:30 Pacific

SAMHSA OTAP is offering a two-day Harm Reduction Summit for Native and non-Native communities. Harm Reduction saves lives, reduces suffering, and creates connections to people. These connections often result in finding treatment, recovery, and other needed services when a person is ready to accept help. However, many people still do not fully understand harm reduction and resistance to it still exists across all communities, including Tribal communities. Education is a key to overcoming this resistance, and this Summit seeks to educate participants through the experience of experts within the AI/AN community who are leaders and advocates of harm reduction.

Topics:
• A history of harm reduction, with a focus on harm reduction principles, progress, and challenges within the AI/AN community.
• Specific harm reduction strategies, with field experts who will share how they have begun, expanded, and run various harm reduction programs.
• Efficacy of various harm reduction strategies and some of the causes contributing to the current overdose epidemic.
• Federal resources and programs available to help start or expand harm reduction programs.

DC: 0-5 Intensive Overview Training

DC: 0-5 Intensive Overview Training

A focus on infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) has been shown to improve children’s social skills and emotional functioning, promote healthy relationships, reduce challenging behaviors, reduce the number of suspensions and expulsions, improve classroom quality, and reduce provider stress, burnout, and turnover. Age-appropriate assessment and diagnosis are key to providing effective mental health supports for children from birth through age five.

This overview provides a foundation for understanding the  DC:0-5™ diagnostic system. While clinically focused, it is high level and absolutely, 100%, relevant to prevention work.  It provides some basic understanding of child development, caregiver and child health, and appropriate evidence-based approaches to addressing needs in the community.

Eligibility
Allied professionals, or individuals whose professional role supports social-emotional well-being and the mental health system of care for children birth through age five enrolled in Apple Health. Some overview trainings may be tailored to professionals in specific roles. Please see the training schedule below for a training that will be best for you.

Cost
Free through June 30, 2023 for Apple Health mental health providers and allied professionals serving children birth through age five in Washington.

What does NOT work in prevention

What does NOT work in prevention

Many trainings and resources focus on what research has shown to be effective to prevent substance misuse. We also know through research what is NOT effective in preventing substance misuse and in some cases is harmful. Yet communities across the nation continue to implement these ineffective and sometimes counterproductive strategies. The focus of this webinar will be on identifying these ineffective approaches. We will also spend time discussing strategies prevention professionals can use to address the resistance often expressed by individuals and organizations reluctant to change long-standing, well-liked prevention practices.

Youth Indoor and Outdoor Exposure to Secondhand Smoke and Aerosol

GHEA and CADCA’s Evaluation and Research Team present the latest installment of the Research Into Action webinar series featuring Dr. Samantha Puvanesarajah and Michael Tynan, MPH from the CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health. Recruitment and Retention Strategies for Culturally Specific Behavioral Health Staff

Recruitment and Retention Strategies for Culturally Specific Behavioral Health Staff

This summer, the Northwest ATTC is hosting a 3-part series on Innovative and Successful Approaches to Staff Recruitment and Retention.

Part 2: Recruitment and Retention Strategies for Culturally Specific Behavioral Health Staff

The current behavioral health workforce emergency is nothing new in the culturally and linguistically specific communities in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Traditional recruitment strategies by dominant culture organizations often fail due to a variety of systemic and cultural barriers that are largely invisible to the established behavioral health systems. Executive Directors Fernando Peña with NW Instituto Latino and Jerrod Murray with Painted Horse Recovery operate culturally specific SUD Recovery Community Organizations that despite the ongoing behavioral health workforce emergency are fully staffed with culturally and linguistically specific staff and routinely have multiple applicants for each open position as one becomes available. In this session, Jerrod and Fernando will share their understanding of the systemic barriers that impact Indigenous and Latinx communities when it comes to the behavioral health workforce. And will share some strategies that they have used to recruit, retain and support their respective teams.

Advancing Applications of HOPE, the Science of the Positive, and Positive Community Norms

Advancing Applications of HOPE, the Science of the Positive, and Positive Community Norms

This two-hour, virtual interactive workshop led by The Montana Institute will provide an overview of the Science of the Positive, Positive Community Norms, and Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) frameworks and how they can be used in harmony to promote child development, grow Positive Childhood Experiences, and promote a healing-centered approach to help children and adults increase resiliency.

The workshop will include current research-findings and applications of these frameworks and will provide participants with opportunities to consider and discuss how they might advance these applications in their own unique contexts.

Building Culturally & Linguistically Specific Recovery Community Organizations For Latinos

Building Culturally & Linguistically Specific Recovery Community Organizations For Latinos

In February of 2021 with a small grant from the local health authority, the NW Instituto Latino de Adicciones (NWIL), opened the first and still only one of its kind culturally and linguistically specific Recovery Community Organization for Latinos in Oregon. This project was the culmination of years of hard work by a dedicated group of volunteer Latinx recovery support professionals (Counselors, Peers, Case Managers) that shared one mission, to better meet the specific recovery needs of the Latino community in Oregon. Success was not ensured, but within 7 weeks of opening the Recovery Drop-In Center had 14 culturally and linguistically specific mutual aid/support groups, had over 900 visitors come through the door, had engaged over 32 clients in formal recovery support/peer mentoring, and had become a hub for the Latino recovery community in the area.

This presentation will talk about how we did what we did, what we learned about launching this project and what we think can help others launch similar projects.
