Prioritizing Equity in Prevention

Prioritizing Equity in Prevention

Two Years In: Reflections on Best Practices to Promote Mental Health and Prevent Substance Misuse Among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Communities Since COVID-19

Description

Asian Americans (AA) and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (NHPI) are the least likely ethnic groups in the US to seek behavioral health services. While AA and NHPI communities represent a large number of diverse ethnic groups, they share some cultural factors that can impact how they seek behavioral health services and how they respond to strategies in promoting mental health and preventing substance misuse. This Learning Session will explore best practices and cultural responsiveness in addressing mental health and substance misuse among AA and NHPI communities.

This Learning Session will include a 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute facilitator-led discussion.

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

  • Identify cultural factors that can act as barriers to seeking behavioral health services
  • Compare strategies that promote mental health and reduce substance misuse among AAs and NHPIs

Analyze trends in mental health and substance use among AA and NHPI communities since the onset of COVID-19

Youth Participatory Action Research Learning Community Meeting

Event Title: Youth Participatory Action Research Learning Community Meeting

Description: These interactive meetings will be an opportunity to create a community of youth-serving providers interested in implementing Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) in their communities. A team of faculty and staff from Washington State University with experience in YPAR will facilitate the meetings. We will prioritize discussing topics that are most relevant to the group - so please bring any questions you have about YPAR regardless of what stage of planning you are at! We will use these sessions to problem solve and brainstorm practical strategies for recruitment, program planning, developing youth-adult partnerships, and more. You are not required to attend all sessions, but we hope to see you as often as you are available!

Those completely new to YPAR are also welcome to attend and learn more. Please also consider joining the YPAR Community of Practice listserv. Joining the listerv will give you access to recordings of prior Introduction to YPAR training sessions. Introduction to Supervision of Peer Based Recovery Support Services

Introduction to Supervision of Peer Based Recovery Support Services

As many people know, the professional identity of peer staff is rooted in their lived experience and deep connection to personal vulnerabilities. What is not often talked about or addressed are the imbalances that many peers face in the workforce. The majority of peers work alongside and are supervised by clinicians and other professionals who may not have the ability to disclose their lived experience, or who do not identify as having lived experience. Often, these imbalances can lead to unclear job descriptions, miscommunication, siloing of services, and replication of the harm many peers have experienced in navigating systems of care.

During this one hour webinar, hosted by the Northwest ATTC, we will provide a 30,000 foot overview of an upcoming training on supervision of peer based recovery support services. This webinar will provide a primer in helping attendees move toward organizational transformation and healing through supportive relationships and supervisory practices.

Speakers: Christina Love, Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA) and Jess Wojcik, Path to Prime LLC

Understanding Grief After Suicide Workshop

Understanding Grief After Suicide Workshop

Forefront Suicide Prevention invites you to our workshop on suicide grief. This workshop is for individuals, families or communities who are bereaved by suicide. The workshop is also designed for anyone wanting to learn how to support a loved one or friend who is bereaved by suicide.

This workshop will shine light on concepts rarely discussed in our culture:

  • Are your experiences ‘normal’?
  • Will you find joy again?
  • What does useful support for a suicide loss survivor look like?

These and many other questions will be answered in this interactive two-hour session.

A resource list will be made available to all participants.

This workshop brings together two presenters: a longtime grief counselor who shares her wisdom and experience, and a suicide loss survivor who shares her journey of grieving and learning, after her son died by suicide.

Cost: $10.00
