3) Identify strategies for filling data gaps caused or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discrimination with Intention- Cultural & Structural Racism

Discrimination with Intention- Cultural & Structural Racism

Cultural & Structural Racism has been used for centuries to devalue, discriminate and disenfranchise BIPOC since the slave laws of the 1600’s. Although Civil Rights Legislation has outlawed discrimination, the residue of Cultural & Structural Racism persists in our Justice, Educational, and Behavioral Health systems today. Every day, BIPOC experiences “racism that contributes to race based traumas that can lead to depression, low self-esteem, avoidance behaviors, etc.” (Association for Behavioral & Cognitive Therapies). Providers could inadvertently contribute to cultural & structural racism if we are not aware of the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs that marginalize BIPOC. This workshop deals with understanding the behaviors contributing to disparities and the marginalization of BIPOC, such as stigma, stereotyping, and macroaggressions. We will also discuss practical strategies to help providers create a safe space holding an environment of respect, belonging and inclusion for all the people we serve regardless of race.

Webinar Objectives:
1) Define Cultural & Structural Racism in the Behavioral Health space.
2) Understand how Cultural & Structural Racism contribute to race based traumas and their negative effects on BIPOC
3) Discuss strategies to effectively support BIPOC populations in a manner that is respectful and inclusive with Cultural Humility.

Webinar: Integrating suicide prevention into the SBIRT model

Webinar: Integrating suicide prevention into the SBIRT model

Description: This summer - in the wake of two celebrity suicides and the release of the CDC report highlighting an alarming rise in the US suicide rate - the public's attention was drawn to the significant public health problem of suicide. Because alcohol and drug use greatly increases suicide risk, it is critical to integrate suicide prevention into substance use early intervention and treatment. This webinar describes suicide as a public health problem and explains how suicide screening and intervention can be integrated into the SBIRT model.

Presented by: Brett Harris, DrPH, is the Director of Public Health Initiatives at the Suicide Prevention Office of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). In this role, Dr. Harris works with large health systems and community providers to integrate suicide safer care into multiple service settings including inpatient and outpatient mental health, emergency departments, substance use disorder treatment, and primary care. Dr. Harris is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University at Albany School of Public Health where she is designing a course in suicide prevention and collaborating on alcohol and drug prevention and early intervention projects. Prior to joining OMH and the University at Albany, Dr. Harris developed, implemented, and evaluated alcohol and drug Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) projects with the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Dr. Harris received her Doctor and Master of Public Health from the University at Albany and her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University.

APHA 2021 — Creating the healthiest nation: Strengthening social connectedness

APHA 2021 — Creating the healthiest nation: Strengthening social connectedness

APHA 2021 — Creating the Healthiest Nation: Strengthening Social Connectedness

From increases in substance misuse and suicide, to reduced quality of life among older adults, the impacts of widespread social isolation are all around us. Public health policies and practices can help counter social isolation by strengthening social cohesion and connectedness. And we can showcase examples and stories that bring attention to hopefulness and connected communities and families to counteract isolation and despair. The time is ripe to highlight communities and initiatives across the country working to restore belonging, trust and connectedness and the emerging research and findings of how public health — working alongside other key sectors — can contribute to environments where healing, hopefulness and aspiration can grow.

APHA's Annual Meeting and Expo offers numerous opportunities for learning, inspiration, and connecting with the public health community. APHA 2021 offers two ways to participate, making the Annual Meeting accessible to more people than ever! All attendees will have access to education, the Public Health Expo and unique networking experiences.

Experience APHA 2021 in Denver

In-person attendees will have the best of both worlds: access to all sessions presented in Denver, live virtual sessions, and on-demand content. APHA's three general and eleven featured sessions will be held in Denver. Nothing can replace the energy and connections of an in-person meeting! Best for: in-person networking, career advancement and camaraderie as an addition to your educational experience.

Experience APHA 2021 at Home

Virtual attendees will gather online to participate and present. Virtual oral sessions will be presented live, and the audience will be able to interact with presenters. A limited number of sessions will be livestreamed from Denver, including all three general and eleven featured sessions. All sessions, virtual and in-person, will be recorded and available for on-demand viewing after the meeting. Best for: access to educational content and for those who need the flexibility of a remote experience.

Webinar: Enhancing Prevention Research Related to Substance Use and Addiction: Identifying research gaps and opportunities with ABCD study data

This meeting is sponsored by NIDA.

Through presentations and discussions, this meeting will connect the fields of epidemiology, developmental neuroscience, and prevention to improve the integration of ABCD findings into prevention intervention research. ABCD data can inform our understanding of heterogeneity associated with substance use risk as well as how that heterogeneity might be leveraged to inform the development of novel interventions and/or the adaptation and tailoring of current interventions to increase the number of youth served who benefit. The goal would be to stimulate data analyses that would lead to the development of targeted prevention intervention research. While there are many relevant key constructs to explore within the ABCD dataset, this initial meeting will focus on trauma and self-regulation and their roles in substance use initiation. For each construct, we will discuss its definition, how it is represented in the ABCD data, and existing or novel strategies for impacting the construct through intervention.

Planning Group: Carlos Blanco, MD, PhD, Bethany Deeds, PhD, MA, Amy Goldstein, PhD from the Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research (DESPR) and Gaya Dowling, PhD, Elizabeth Hoffman, PhD from the ABCD Study, Office of Trans-NIH Initiatives
