Schools encounter many difficult life issues of their student: substance abuse, bullying, sexting, violence, and so much more. Yet, many schools struggle with how to address these issues amidst their primary charge of focusing on the curriculum and meeting state standards. This also means, face time with students is at a premium and resources are scarce.

At the same time, prevention science has grown. We know so much more about what DOES work. And, just as important, what DOES NOT work. We have a long list of evidence-based programs on a variety of topics. We also have a great list of evidence-based practices which inform new program design.

In essence, today, the research on what works is at an all-time high, while school capacity to implement evidence-based practices is decreasing. This means the role of prevention specialists is also changing.

This session will provide an opportunity to explore the new dynamics of school-based prevention.  Including key questions such as:

  • * How can you convey the IMPORTANCE of research-based strategies?
  • * Where do you get the most RESISTANCE to utilizing evidence-based strategies?
  • * How can you help key gatekeepers to INCREASE THE NUMBER AND QUALITY of effective prevention strategies?

We will also discuss the role of the prevention professional, the role of coalitions and related workforce development issues.
