Starting Salary:
$27 - $28/hour DOE + Great Benefits – This is a Part-time (20 hours a
week) ten (10) month position to coincide with the school year.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is responsible for providing crisis intervention, individual, group and limited family
counseling, and information and referral to elementary students and their families. Other activities may include classroom presentations and guidance, Alternative Recess, and consultation to staff. Students are referred by school personnel, counselors, parents, other students and by self-referral. Services are provided on site at Mercer Island Elementary Schools. There is currently one counselor per school building. This is a Part-time ten (10) month position to coincide with the school year.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide individual counseling to K-5 students.
Provide support groups for students (social skills, friendship, divorce, grief and loss, etc.).
Provide consultation to parents.
Provide behavioral management consultation and planning, including classroom and recess
observations, monitoring and follow-up.
Provide support and consultation to school staff as needed, participating as a member of the school Building Guidance Team.
Provide activities designed to improve and support the emotional, behavioral and social skills development of students (lunchtime drop-in groups, Alternative Recess activities, peer mediation, student council, etc.).
Establish an effective working relationship with the school principal.
Provide classroom guidance and community/PTSA presentations concerning a variety of topics (friendship, stress reduction, bullying, and parenting).
Provide crisis intervention, information and referral.
Complete monthly reports and other required paperwork.
Attend and participate in Department meetings and consultations.
Participate in Department-wide projects.
Participate on City committees and in City-related training as appropriate.
Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington Sate driver's license and good driving record.
Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Masters degree in counseling, social work or related field.
State license in mental health, social work, or marriage and family therapy.
Minimum of five years’ post-graduate experience providing individual, group and family counseling with elementary-aged children.
Minimum of two years’ post-graduate experience working in a school-based setting.
Experience with children with behavior disorders.
Experience teaching social skills and self-esteem curriculums to elementary school children.
Experience in crisis intervention, information and referral.
Knowledge of :
child development

childhood mental and developmental disorders
divorce, grief and loss
Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication in the English language, interpersonal relationships, teamwork and time management.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
