Department of Education Releases Data Snapshot on Disparities in School Discipline
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has released “Civil Rights Data Collection: Data Snapshot (School Discipline).” This issue brief provides analysis of data from public schools nationwide that show disparities in how students—beginning in preschool—are disciplined based on their race/ethnicity, gender, and disability status.
Data reveal that African American students, especially males; American Indian/Alaska Native students; and students with disabilities disproportionately face the most extreme forms of discipline and excluding increasing numbers of these students from the classroom causes them to lose instructional time.
